This greengrocer is the centre of the universe for a local community where the meaning of life and other small matters are discussed over an endless stream of beer. 400 watercolour images show the neighbourhood and its not-so-good-natured inhabitants living amidst smelly dustbins, tin garages and urin-stained stairwells.

The young police officer Andrzej is transferred to the remote Gallicia province known for its strawberry wine… and not much more. He soon gets to know the local people and finds distraction in the sultry temptress Lubica. Things heat up when jealous husband Marian slays a rival and turns himself in. Director Dariusz Jablonski, who often worked as Krzysztof Kieslowski’s assistant director, adaptated Andrzej Stasiuk’s highly acclaimed novel into this richly symbolic film.
