Based on a true story chronicled by Ralph Hochhuth, this depicts a wartime romance between a Polish POW and a German woman (Fassbinder’s muse Hanna Schygulla) that is doomed as soon as the Gestapo find out. So far so conventional, but Wajda tells this from the perspective of her son and grandson, who return to her native village in 1983 to find out what really happened.
