Shot in Paris after filming in Poland proved impossible, Wajda’s dramatisation of the Danton-Robespierre clash proved controversial in France, where he was perceived to have taken too many liberties with the historical record. However, in Poland and elsewhere, the film’s anatomising of the appalling consequences of pure revolutionary idealism struck a powerful chord, helped immensely by Gérard Depardieu’s towering performance in the title role.
