This riveting, Palme d’Or-winning sequel to Man of Marble anatomises the then ongoing Gdansk shipyard dispute by way of a government-sponsored journalist sent to rubbish the reputation of one of the leading strikers – the son of the earlier film’s shock-worker. But while the earlier film explored the past, this discussed the (then) present, its jubilantly optimistic ending unveiled just months before martial law brought everything to a juddering halt.
