Undoubtedly minor Wajda, but of more than passing interest for John Gielgud’s performance as Jan Lasocki, a world-famous conductor who returns to his native Poland after decades abroad. The resulting triangular situation where he encounters the daughter of an old flame and her conductor husband (a hack who favours discipline over inspiration) opens up several key Wajda themes: national identity, artistic integrity and nostalgia for an unrecapturable past.
