Wednesday 21st May 2008 20:40 at BFI Southbank
Cast: Anna Seniuk, Maja Komorowska. 116min. Poland-France 1979.
After attracting the censors’ ire with his politicised work, Wajda deliberately changed pace with this wistful, elegiac, almost Chekhovian recreation of a long-vanished Poland. In the late 1920s, Wiktor (Wajda’s regular leading man Daniel Olbrychski) returns to the country town that he abandoned fifteen years earlier, only to reencounter five sisters and reopen their various emotional wounds, caused largely by his inability to empathise.
