A TV reporter given privileges unimaginable to most of his fellow countrymen sees them gradually withdrawn after he makes the mistake of discussing press freedom on air, while his wife abandons him for a colleague. The Polish title translates as ‘without anaesthetic’, which gives some idea of the sour tone of one of Wajda’s bravest assaults on the Communist system (since he was just as vulnerable to official disfavour).
