This multilayered, Citizen Kane inspired investigation into the facts behind the iconography of a 1950s shock-worker turned Stalinist propaganda stooge was first conceived in the early 1960s, but proved unfilmable for a decade and a half. It was worth the wait, as Krystyna Janda’s firecracker performance as the ambitious film student in search of a career-breaking scoop is easily the strongest female character in any Wajda film.
