Cast: Daniel Olbrychski, Wojciech Pszoniak, Andrzej Seweryn, 179 min. Poland 1974.
Set in Lodz, where Wajda studied film, this vividly-realised, almost Dickensian recreation of the white heat of of Poland’s industrial revolution is shown from the viewpoint of would-be entrepreneurs whose Machiavellian machinations are ultimately powerless against the inexorable march of history. It’s Poland’s equally ambitious equivalent of Visconti’s The Damned and Bertolucci’s 1900, and garnered Wajda the first of four Best Foreign Film Oscar nominations.
