Not normally given to personal introspection, Wajda was so stunned by the sudden death of Zbigniew Cybulski that he broke with convention to make this wrenching study of a film crew (its Andrzej is a clear self-portrait) faced with the loss of a colleague in identical circumstances. But that’s just one facet of a complex enquiry into the creation of film art that stands comparison with Fellini’s 81⁄2.
